Queens of 2012! Hooray!

Evening Dazzlers and Dazzler-ettes!

Given that tomorrow we ring in the new year, I thought we should go over some of the women who have made Burlesque more dazzling and delightful this year with their amazing wins in their respective competitions!

First Up, I've been dying for an excuse to put this one, because goddamn she is smoking! This years "Queen of Burlesque" at the New Orleans Burlesque Festival 2012 was Angi B Lovely, her routine is to a live band is amazing, in fact all contestants used the live band which I think is awesome! Her bumps and classic startup still gets me, so enjoy!

Next up, we're skipping across back home to Australia to this years winner of Miss Burlesque 2012, Briana Bluebell, who made a bang with her winning James Bond routine! Given that I'm entering the 2013 competition, you know what kinda of caliber of dancer we have in Australia!

Now we travel back to the motherland for the World Burlesque Games 2012 in the UK and we find ourselves the winner of the Female British crown, Eliza DeLite, who looks radiant and beautiful and her costume makes me giggle with girlish glee! I don't what it is but I can't embed this baby either! So go to the link!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBh7BZjohT8

Now we head back to America to the 10th Anniversary of the New York Burlesque festival, where while many people's choice awards are voted for, the one I am personally most excited about is "The Cutest Geek in Burlesque award" this year won by Dangrrr Doll, and after watching this, for good reason! Sorry guys, still can't embed with this website still!

http://www.burlesquestars.net/video/dangrrr-doll-at-nybf-2012/5541

And now finally, the reigning queen of Burlesque for 2012 deserve the last spot on this list. She really is such an amazing performer in Burlesque in Australia, Imogen Kelly has paved the way for Aussie Burlesque dancers for the future I hope, and while I couldn't find a video of the Flamingo routine (which I have seen and loved!) I found the next best thing, her Marie Antoinette routine! I'm adding this version purely for my own love of Paul Mcdermott!

So keep well and don't get too drunk lovelies! We'll see you in the new year ready to tease and excite at Miss Burlesque for you lot!

Burlesque History Lesson: We'll dance the Hootchie Coochie!

Hello Dazzlers and Dazzler-ettes!

I've gotta say, with a lot of delving into the information highway called the internet, I've found that a lot of the Victorian Era really got their raunch on in the late 1880's and 1890's and have been dubbed by some as the "Naughty Nineties"! I cant wait to look into this more!

That being said, one of the raunchiest dances that became synonymous with the strip is the cooch dance, also known at the hootch-kootch, hootchie-kootchie, and many other spellings, but essentially its all the same dance.

Cooch dancing is basically Belly Dancing, but again, Victorian spinmasters got their hands on it and it became quite a popular dance to do during burlesque shows, there was a lot of shimmying, shaking and the belly movements were an unusual trick not seen in western countries.

While the first listed time the dance was performed is in the 1876 in a convention in Philadelphia, however it didn't take off until the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 when it was included as part of a main section called "A Street in Cairo" where at one end you could get a Camel ride and the other end you could watch the girls dance their dance from 10am until 10pm every day of the fair! They were definitely more covered up that their burlesque companions, they wore baggy pants and some veils, however, it was the bare stomachs and bare feet that caused the most scandal, as well having their hair out and hanging down their shoulders, having your out in public had you considered to be a wild woman with loose morals!

What came out of it though was that there were women called "Little Egypt" who would then perform similar routines. Funnily enough, it's never been clear who "Little Egypt" was as the organisers never named any of their dancers that name. In fact, it wasn't until 1895 that a dancer in Coney Island New York actually called herself "Little Egypt" when dancing the cooch dance, who , of course, got arrested for her gyrations, which boosted sales for the attraction at Coney Island.

Here's a video of one such cooch dancer, names Princess Rajah, who does it with a chair in her mouth (this video is part of the Library of Congress video archiving project, there is some really great stuff on their youtube channel!)

The dance stayed popular in theatres, but didn't get really popular until the raunch was kicked up a notch in St Louis' Expo in 1896 where the first "strip" cooch dance was performed by a dancer named Omeena, more than likely using veils. Veils were very popular and Oscar Wilde's interpretation of the biblical story "Salome" came out at the same time telling how she did a dance of the Seven Veils strip to get John the Baptist released. These dances became popular in the period of 1904 at another St Louis Expo and 1907 and the strip started to really come in then.

Of course, the most famous interpretation of this dance is Rita Hayworth's performance in the movie "Salome". And of course I'm adding because well, it's fabulous!

There are quite a few parody songs about Salome and Coochie dancing that were written at the time, it seemed that the fad which had come into the 21st century was here to stay....However in 1908, the idea of "Venus" in her clam became the new fad, and the shimmys and shakes of the cooch dancing did not come back in vogue until the 1920's thanks to the flapper lifestyle, which became included in your basic bump, thrusts and shakes you see in early burlesque routines!

That's all for now but I am going to be doing my fave queens of 2012 before NYE for you all in between rehearsals for Miss Burlesque and I am also going to review an interesting book which was part of a Kickstarter I supported recently!

Keep on Dazzling!

Photoshoot With David Woolley: The Steampunk Showgirl Shoot

Hello Dazzlers and Dazzler-ettes!

So a couple of Sundays ago, I finally spent the dollars and booked myself my first photo shoot!

I booked myself in with David Woolley, Pinup photographer extraordinaire and who also specializes in Steampunk photo shoots as well! He's been shooting Pinup photo sessions for a few years, but it's in the last year he's started the Steampunk photo shoots. Perth's really lucky to have a photographer that can do both and do both well!

I chose two types of looks, both contrasting, one light and in lingerie, the other darker in my showgirl costume. I had my hair and makeup done by Siouxane, A really really talented FX artist here in Perth whose work I've quietly fangirled over in the past. Listening to her and getting her tips is always a great thing.

The light and lingerie photo shoot came out very femme fatale/Saloon girl, I don't consider this a bad thing, Steampunk western has intrigued me of late, or at least deep south American steampunk!

The next part of the shoot, I went dark hair with a wig, and went all out with guns and exploring looking for treasure, all in my Rhinestone encrusted  goggles! My favourite and unconventional accessory! It looks like I can't see in them, But I actually can!

The costuming I made the majority of, using both modern and vintage reproduction patterns, my favourite is the corset cover, made from a vintage repo 1897 pattern from www.vpll.org, go there, her patterns are amazing! some of it will need tweaking for dancing in I've discovered, but they are surprinsingly light for a bustle skirt and corset cover. I've got more coming in the series, but I wanted to show these because they really are some of my favourite photos, and it's exciting to do these kind of shoots, and I'd love to do more in the future!

The full album is here on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.382874458466850.95373.362402200514076&type=3

My weekend of Bad girls and Wicked Women!

Evening Dazzlers & Dazzler-ettes!

So this weekend, I got to see a lot of naughty women be on their worst behaviour.....And it was wonderful!

Sugar Blue put on their final show for the year "Bad Girls and Wicked Women" at the Fly By Night, However Friday night I had the joy of going to The Strawberry Siren's Cirlesque class which was fantastic. A lot of it was conditioning and different ways to look after your body so its Burlesque ready and I definitely felt invigorated (albeit a little sore!) afterwards.

(via: www.strawberrysiren.com)

I do however have Britney Spears' "Radar" Now in my head, But I can forgive that as what she taught were sometimes the most basic things, sometimes we all good, even about just touching yourself in the right way and the right way to hold yourself that makes such a change. There's a reason she's taken Miss Burlesque Victoria twice, she has the most amazing presence on stage and off, it was amazing to be in that room. One thing I've had told to me a few times is make sure your learn off many people, because everyone has a different way of doing things and it can help your creativity. I fully intend to keep learning no matter what happens for certain, and I always look forward to it when people like Strawberry Siren come over because its refreshing to have new points....I digress and it's definitely a post for another time!

Now! Back to the women! There was a great opening piece from the "Hussy Housefraus" a group of disgruntled housewives with guns is always a good thing just to remind your other half to take out the trash!

Returning performer Clara Cupcakes came back, glorious as ever, and covered in glitter. Clara is one of my favourites and a definite muse for myself so to see her on the stage, with an amazing energy and dancing with belly dancing fans to boot was exciting and stunning to watch, However I think I missed which bad girl she was playing, maybe from the hooting and hollering! If anyone can fill me in please do! but I thoroughly enjoyed it and it made me so happy so see her back!

Danica Lee was one of the next acts, a former Miss Burlesque NSW 2010. I've seen Danica Lee perform before, when she came over for the Perth International Burlesque Festival. I don't think another performer has made my pulse race like Danica does! She looks with a smoulder into the audience and makes you swoon. I can't get enough of her and her final routine of a priestess coveting her crystal skull was amazingly beautiful to watch, a true Femme Fatale she is, and I really hope she does well in Miss Burlesque 2013.

Via www.sugarblueburlesque.com

Let's not forget Strawberry Siren though! Her Routines of a fire routine using her redhead matchstick tattoo to light up her firesticks was comical and sexy, The best kind of Burlesque to me! She also did a great Statue of Liberty routine which was almost a homage to New York as well and I really enjoyed how clever and sassy it was. One thing I really love about Strawberry's routines are the fact she is focused on the crowd, while they can look and not touch, she's firmly with the crowd making sure they're engaged and turned on by what she's doing. I love it, I absolutely love what she does.

The Sugar Blue girls were firmly set in their wicked ways during the evening as well, with Charles D Barker, the troupe's personal Frank Sinatra, singing as Norman Bates and his mother to a future murder victim behind a shower curtain really quite enjoyable.

I also enjoyed Ruby DeLure and Dakota Peaches Chicago Charleston act, I hadn't seen Dakota Peaches, but they work off each other well and everyone loves a good Charleston!

I think fan favourite was for certain everyone's favourite naughty Pin-Up girl, Bettie Page in a "Page off" against Jungle Betty and Bondage Betty, wonderfully executed by Agatha Frisky and Kitty Litteur.

Also performed was probably one of my favourite routines by the Sugar Blue girls Agatha Frisky, Ruby DeLure and Kitty Litteur was a chair dance to Kanye's "Goldigger", and the bonus was the loser of the audience game "bite the pink box" (no really they were present boxes that were pink!) was their "Pimp/Sugar Daddy" and got to help them throw money!

I really enjoyed the night, and until next year....I'm sure we'll see more from Sugar Blue soon!

Sorry for the delay!

Todays Videos and blog are running on Cog power.

Evening Dazzlers & Dazzler-ettes!

I'm currently gearing up and sewing for Miss Burlesque and My photo-shoot at the end of the month at the moment, and I'm planning on a Steampunk shoot of course! So I thought you might enjoy a little Steampunk Burlesque goodness!

For those who don't know what Steampunk is, Steampunk is a Genre of Science Fiction, based predominately in an alternate Victorian Era universe, instead of being 100's of years in the future, it's more like 100+ years in the past using modern-esque technology run on steam!

The interesting part is, there was actually Victorian Era science fiction, great examples include Jules Verne and H.G Wells' classics. A great book to find is "Steampunk Prime: A Vintage Steampunk Reader" By Mike Ashley and Paul Di Fillipo. It has short science fiction stories that were published in Victorian Newspapers at the time and includes stories about Airship disasters, the end of the world, fighting beings from Mars and Clockwork Chess playing robots, standard sci-fare, but they were the first stories written at a time when literacy rates were starting to climb from the industrial revolution. I also have my faves, but I'll save them for another post!

Given that Burlesque is also a Victorian Era pastime, mixing the two together was also going to happen! and here are a couple of the best!

Holly Ween for White Elephant Burlesque with her "Teddy Bear"
Ok. It may not be Steampunk, but it was at a Steampunk Convention, and quite frankly wins all the awards for Costuming this week!

Kerryx - "Fighting Trousers"
This routine is glamourous, Beautiful, and has got a quirky end that I love, Belly Dancing and Steampunk work quite well together, and I'm now hunting down Professor Elemental's Steampunk Rap albums as we speak!

Victoria Privates as R2-D2 from Emma Story on Vimeo.

This one encompases my two favourite loves: Star Wars and Steampunk. That's all you really need to know!

Sleep well!

Videos of Burlesque I'm enjoying!

Hello Dazzlers & Dazzler-ettes!

Tonight I felt like watching some boobies and well, look what I've found here!

April O'Peel: Jungle Hair.
Sorry Ladies and Gentlefolk, Blogger wont let me embed from this site for some reason! However, please enjoy the way she takes her top off. And I also enjoy the movement. Whats the best thing to do with a gorgeous rack? Why hang things off it of course!

Mummy Goodness: Lola Frost & Cherry on Top
With Halloween just around the corner, we all love a good Egyptian Mummy horror story (my fave Goosebumps story as a kid too!) Lola Frost and Cherry on Top happily deliver on this!

Cthulhu Strip: Anja Keister

Speaking of Halloween, one thing people enjoy are horror stories, and Lovecraft vintage horror stories helped with paving the way, and what better way to honour him than with D20's Cthulhu routine by Anja Keister! I'm becomming a big fan of Nerdlesque which is starting to grow in the US, this gives the perfect reason why!

Burlesque History Lesson: Lydia Thompson

Hello Dazzlers and Dazzler-ettes!

Today's Sunday, in between sewing projects, involves a little bit of a history lesson. Everyone should know their roots (even if you dye them!), and what better way to start than one of the first women to perform Burlesque than Lydia Thompson, whose "British Blondes" troupe began the Burlesque movement in America.

Lydia was born in 1838, and left home at 14 to start dancing, and in 1852 at 16, joined Her Majesty's Theatre as one of their dancers. In wasn't until 1855 though, that she did her Burlesque show, which were back then more about poking fun rather than taking your clothes off. They were still just as scandalous however, with women showing their legs albeit covered in tights, dressing like men in costumes that only went to their thighs and taking on their mannerisms while poking fun at them. Her dancing in the Burlesque extravaganzas made her acclaimed throughout Europe by the time she was 21. The Times in London called her "One of the most eminent of English dancers".

Lydia in her "Bird's nest" Costume!

In 1863, she married and had a child with her first husband, who died during a steeplechase just a year later, but by 1868, she had married again, this time to Alexander Henderson, and who for the next 18 years until his death in 1886, would be her business partner even after separation, and integral in helping her bring her most famous production about.

Lydia had decided in 1868 that Burlesque should and would be brought to America. It was to be an extravaganza of comediennes, dancers, actors and Burlesque stories....that was entirely performed by women. Lydia was also in control of "image" for the tour and with the help of promoter Archie Gordon, made sure that while their routines may be scandalous, her girls reputations were pure and that by the time they touched America soil, she was practically the Lady Gaga of English Burlesque.

It was an overnight sensation almost, with men and women both scandalized and entranced by what these "British Blonde" performers could do, with ample bosoms, revealing costumes for the time and "all natural" blonde hair. The shows were not as well received with open arms by everyone. American Feminist Olive Logan in a speech to the Equal Rights association of America lambasted Lydia's Blondes for their risque and demeaning performances. Mark Twain was also probably one of the most famous critics of the Blondes during their tour.

In 1870, one particular critic Wilbur Storey had it in for her troupe and had insinuated the depraved virtues and sexuality of her girls and as she put it "had called her by the most odious epithet that could be applied to a woman, and she could stand it no longer". By not standing for it any longer, she meant that her, her husband Alexander and one of the shows top performers Pauline Markham went and horsewhipped him while at gunpoint in his home, and while arrested, were only made to pay a fine. I can bet there would be a few people who would want to do that to their critics!

Lydia and some of her "British Blondes" Troupe

Amazingly, the troupe's original tour of only 6 months which was to be only the Burlesque Ixion (a Greek Mythology mind you about a guy who in some versions of the story performed oral sex on Zeus' wife Hera at the table and then got chained to a spinning wheel on fire for eternity as a result! Manners, really!), went on for 6 years and they performed 12 different Burlesque shows during that time including Robin Hood, Sinbad the Sailor, Robinson Crusoe and Aladdin! They were entranced by these strong, self possessed and unbridled women.

They returned in 1874 where she kept performing and touring, and her husband Alexander even bought a Burlesque Theatre in 1876, named the "Folly Theatre" where she performed for many years, in between touring American and Europe. She tried retiring in 1879, but she was back again in 1881 on stage. In 1894 she completed her last American Tour, then 56, and she was performing up until the year she died in November 1908, aged 70.

Lydia was survived by her Daugter Agnes, who later became known as "Zeffie" Tilbury, and moved to America to work in silent movies, including one with Greta Garbo and one of her last movies was "The Grapes of Wrath"in 1940.

Fun fact: Lydia had a "Lesbian Stalker" who had followed them from city to city, so enraptured with Lydia and threw herself at Lydia when she finally managed to get her alone. When Lydia tried to push her away, the attacker charged her with assault and she was arrested in Chicago in 1870!

 Keep on Dazzling!

Stage Door Johnnies: Hello Boys!

Afternoon Dazzlers and Dazzler-ettes!

I'm recovering from last nights Fresh Faced Follies, and a special thank you to those who came and saw my pineapples get very wet! I'm glad you all enjoyed it!

Tuesday night was a night I was particularly excited about. I'd watched the videos, read the interviews and seen the photos, but nothing really, in my mind prepared me for these amazing boys. I almost did slide off my seat in pure happiness!

(
(c) Derek Jackson from 21stcenturyburlesque.com

The Stage Door Johnnies for those who don't know or missed out, are comprised of three gorgeous Chicago men called Bazuka Joe, Jett Adore and (my personal new man crush) Ray Gunn. These guys won best group in 2011 at the Burlesque Hall of Fame (BHoF) weekend in Las Vegas and they most definitely earned it. Jett Adore has also won in the past "Most Innovative" at the weekend in 2010 for his performance of his "White Peacock" routine, which was absolutely stunning, and definitely a favourite of my peacock loving friends.

Bazuka Joe opened up the show with a towel removing routine, which was quite cheeky and a clever Chinese fan routine, which I really loved. I really enjoyed how sweet and clever his routines were and my personal favourite introduction for him was "he'll put the duck sauce on YOUR egg roll!"

Jett Adore not only did his stunning Peacock routine, but also a very Showman routine with lots of flying coattails and strategically placed bow-ties! Jett Adore and his costuming was amazing stunning and inspiring! After the show when he came out in a full-length Frock coat in sparkly purple brocade, I may have "fangirled" equally over both him and the coat.

Ray Gunn pretty much changed the way I look at the Disney Jungle Book movie now with a Jungle man/snake routine with a very suggestive apple at the end! He also performed a very rock/punk bump n' grind routine which resulted in spraying his drink everywhere, very messy, but in the best way possible! Fun fact I found about Ray too is that he works with a Steampunk dance group called "Brass and Cogs" which excites my Steampunkery love!

We can't also forget the girls supporting the Johnnies who are just as amazing! The MC Nadine Dubois was a definite hit and I enjoyed her banter with the audience, I thank her for learning what "Jetski-ing" was, I like it when shows are educational too. The Schlep sisters comprised of Minnie Tonka, who is all types of 1980's fabulousness and Darlinda just Darlinda, who competed in this years BHoF Reigning Queen competition and performed her neon strip which was amazing to watch! Both their group routines, especially their finale ABBA/Disco inspired routine were beautiful to watch.

All in all, I was so happy, excited and inspired by watching these amazingly talented people! It was worth every penny, and there's now a signed picture from them hanging in my lounge room soon!

I'll leave you with the best part of the night for me......

(l-r: Bazuka Joe, Jett Adore and Ray Gunn)

Bon Voyage Baby tonight!

Hello Dazzlers and Dazzler-ettes!

With the last minute preparations for Fresh Faced Follies this Wednesday nearly done, tonight I'm off to see Bon Voyage Baby, which is a farewell tribute show to Sapphire Demure (Lia), one of the teachers at Sugar Blue Burlesque before she leaves for London town!

I took my first class with Sapphire in August 2011 when I had just a twinkle in my eye for Burlesque after looking for years at the website and never quite having the guts to do it.

It was a year later after many classes and learning different techniques and different ways to hold myself, that I made my solo debut on stage, and I can say with certainty I wouldn't have gone through with it if it wasn't for her. She has definitely shaped the beginnings of the dancer I am today, and opened my eyes to so much, and for that I'm going to be forever grateful.

Bon Voyage Baby is on Tonight at the Bakery, 233 James St Northbridge, doors open 7:30pm, $30 at the door or $25 if you buy now on www.nowbaking.com.au

Welcome to the Showgirl!

Good Evening Dazzlers and Dazzler-ettes!

My name is Dollar Dazzler, I'm a Burlesque dancer from Perth whose time traveling through Steampunk Books has inspired me to be more scandalous than my Victorian fore-mothers and their dance hall shenanigans!

I fell in love with Steampunk in 2009 when I was whisked away to an event called "Euchronia" in a civilized city called Melbourne, and from there I have read and fallen in love with the literature, art and of course, the fashion and societal etiquette which is constantly upended and yet held with high regard and affection.

Burlesque is not quite as long a story. While I am trained in theatre and circus arts and performing since I was 7, I have been studying for over a year with Sugar Blue Burlesque and honed the type of dancing skills those dance hall girls would be proud of!

I intend to make this a place of Burlesque/Steampunk love and share many different things and places to explore while keeping you in the loop with who I'm dazzling next!

Dazzle on!
